HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

The HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid course provides the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to first aid emergencies in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and other peak clinical bodies.

CPR training provides the knowledge and skills for first aiders to deliver lifesaving CPR, which can support a casualty’s life until further assistance arrives.

You will gain the knowledge and confidence to perform CPR and deliver additional lifesaving techniques, including using an AED (Automated external defibrillator), the management of asthma, anaphylaxis, non-life-threatening choking, shock and stroke, envenomation, using pressure immobilisation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains and minor wound cleaning and dressing.

Award issued:

Participants who are deemed competent upon completing all the course requirements (theory and practical assessments) will receive a Statement of Attainment in:

Course information:

  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid training is for all persons who may be required to provide first aid in various situations, including in the home, in the workplace and in the broader community.
  • The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid be renewed every three (3) years.
  • The Safe Work Australia First Aid in the Workplace Model Code of Practice requires employers to ensure their nominated first aiders attend training regularly to remain current. The Code of Practice recommends that refresher CPR training be carried out annually (12 months).
  • There are no pre-requisites for this first aid course.

Course requirements:

  • All participants must be able to kneel on the floor while performing 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR, as per the assessment requirements set in the Unit of Competency (HLTAID011).
  • All participants must have a moderate understanding of English to be able to complete the course.

Course duration:

  • 16 hours face-to-face

OR

  • 8 hours face-to-face plus eLearning

Assessment requirements:  

Participants will receive an assessment workbook containing the theory assessments (unless completing this component online) and information on practical assessments.

  • The theory assessments consist of multiple-choice quizzes
  • The practical assessments consist of practical exercises and workplace-based scenarios completed in groups or pairs. They will involve demonstrating your skills in placing a casualty in the recovery position, performing CPR on adult and child manikins on the floor, and applying principles and procedures for first aid management.

    • Guidelines and procedures
    • Legal, workplace and community considerations
    • Considerations when providing CPR
    • Techniques for providing CPR to adults, children and infants
    • Allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
    • Asthma
    • Non-life-threatening and life-threatening bleeding
    • Burns
    • Cardiac conditions, including chest pain
    • Choking
    • Diabetes
    • drowning
    • Envenomation – all current treatments
    • Eye injuries and nose-bleed
    • Fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains
    • Head, neck and spinal injuries
    • Hypothermia and hyperthermia
    • Minor wounds
    • Poisoning
    • Seizures
    • Shock
    • Sharps injuries
    • Stroke

Essential outcomes:

  • Respond to an emergency
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Review the incident
