PUAEME008 – Provide pain management
The PUAEME008 – Provide pain management course provides the skills and knowledge required to administer restricted analgesics to provide pain management as part of a medically supervised first responder organisation. It includes identifying the need for analgesia; accessing, preparing and administering restricted pain relief and aspiring according to medically endorsed protocols; performing casualty handovers and completing analgesic use requirements.
The course is suitable for personnel from or students wishing to be employed in emergency services, volunteer organisations or organisation that provide a medically supervised first aid service.
Licensing requirements for the storage and administration of drugs may apply.
Certification issued
Students who are deemed competent upon completing all the course requirements (theory and practical assessments) will receive a Statement of Attainment in:

Course information
- This course has a pre-requisite of HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid. Students must hold a HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid and also be aware of the course requirements as below.
Course requirements
- All students must have a moderate understanding of English to be able to complete the course.
- Students will be required to provide their own digital devices and have access to reliable internet to record and submit assessments, including access to:
- Internet access through Google Chrome or other internet browsers
- MS Word or equivalent applications
- Adobe Acrobat Reader or equivalent applications

Course duration
- Face to Face Delivery: 6 hours 45 minutes in the classroom
- Blended Delivery: 3 hours self-paced eLearning, 6 hours in the classroom
Assessment requirements
Students are required to complete both theory and practical assessments:
- Theory assessments (either eLearning or face-to-face) consist of multiple-choice and True/False questions.
- The practical assessment consists of practical exercises, workplace-based scenarios.

- Preparing appropriate dosage of analgesic (include checking contraindications and precautions)
- Apply WHS requirements
- Display good communication skills
- Follow medically endorsed protocols, and comply with legislation
- Monitor casualty
- Demonstrate effective handover
- Secure analgesic drugs in storage facility
- Organisational documentation, policies and procedures
- Manufacturers’ guidelines
- Principles of casualty pain assessment and management
